Once you buy something used, it's your responsibility, not the former owners. Didn't you do a pre-sale inspection? That would have caught any problems, and you could have adjusted the sale price accordingly. Somehow I strongly doubt the ex owners boyfriend is going to say 'Gee, we knew it didn't work, and now that you caught us out, we're going to make it good and pay for the repair'. You can either fix it yourself, or bring it to a Cummins Onan service center, Camping World, or one of the many other RV service centers. Just be aware the service center option does not come cheap. If you decide to attempt the repair yourself, we may be able to help if you have a question.

There are a number of things that can cause the symptoms you describe, and you are going to have to do some troubleshooting. For that you need a service manual.

You can download one here: Your generator is a 4Kw twin cylinder Emerald series manufactured in July of 1992. The spec letter you need is J. It is modern enough to use electronic ignition instead of points.

There is a good description of the control operation starting on page 7-1, and some troubleshooting charts in appendix A. Read through the appropriate sections and follow the test procedures. Whatever you do, don't just start throwing parts at it. Onan is VERY proud of their parts.

In looking at the service manual in question, I see that this unit has electronic ignition, and has the plastic arm with the magnets on it. There are quite a few posts on this forum about the plastic arm getting broken, due to age or to critter interference. If this arm is indeed broken, replacement is not an easy task, because I think the engine and genend have to be separated to get to the arm (Billy, correct me if I'm wrong).

This ignition method strikes me as less-than-brilliant over the long term. This may be a job for someone with substantial experience on these units. Dave Edmonds.
